Bankruptcy - How to Choose a Lawyer

Posted in on

If you choose to file bankruptcy and you decide to use a lawyer how do you determine who to use. The answer is simple, interview them. Most bankruptcy lawyers will consult with you for free and this is your time to interview them. Go to at least 3-5 consultations and know the answers to your questions before you go.

Here are some basic questions to ask:

1. What is the difference between Chapter 7 and 13?
2. How much does it cost for each chapter?
3. How long does the process take?
4. What can I expect at he hearing?

There are other questions you can ask, but you get the idea. Not only will you get a feel for their PR side when you meet in person. but their answers will tell you how experienced they are.

Remember that the preparation time if you decide bankruptcy is for you is just as important as the bankruptcy itself. The "go back" time is usually 4-5 months, meaning you have to produce all records and statements backwards from the date you file. This procedure may influence the date you will decide to file on. This is generally under you control unless you are in jeopardy of losing a house or a garnishment.

You will quickly sniff out a good from bad lawyer after a few meetings. They work for you and in this case you have to make the right choice the first time or else your headache will become even bigger.
